What you should know: 
For everyday walking around these earphones fit securely. Plenty of people used the original S4 and S4i for sporting use -- that's where they ran into some durability issues -- and this new model seems fine for a light workout, but I wouldn't count on them staying in my ears while running.

What it offers:

The advantage:

The unfavorable: 
Opt for other models in the S4 line if you want Android compatibility or better sweat resistance; bass lovers probably won't be satisfied by the amount of bass.

The Tesla Model S

What you should know:
The 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year has all the features you'd expect from a vehicle that has earned that honor. Tesla offers three lithium-ion battery packs for the Model S -- 40-kW-hr, 60-kW-hr, and 85-kW-hr -- that are claimed to provide ranges of 140, 200, and 265 miles, respectively. The base 85-kW-hr power train delivers a stout 362 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque, while the performance version makes 416 hp and 443 lb-ft.

The Tesla Model S nails the formula established by the German brands that currently dominate the midsize luxury sedan sector. It's fast and great to drive. It's well-equipped and high-tech. It won't look out of place rolling up the drive of a leafy country club or at the curb of a hip hotel. It's a credible alternative to a Mercedes, BMW, or Audi for someone who lives in metroplexes such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Atlanta.

What it offers: 
It has a light body, advanced design, a roomy cabin, and plenty of load capacity. What the Tesla Model S doesn't have is an internal combustion engine.
The advantage: 
First Car of the Year with no internal combustion engine. Motor Trend heaps praise on the Model S, saying it drives like a sports car and sashays like a supermodel working a Paris catwalk.

The unfavorable: 
The gas/electric hybrid is starting to look kind of old school next to the sleek all-electric Model S.

The price:
This all-electric supermodel starts at $58,570 and has a range of 265 miles.

The Samsung HMX-QF20

What you should know: 
One of the advantages to going with a camcorder like the QF20 is its size. It's lightweight and comfortable to shoot with and small enough to stash in large coat pocket or small bag. As far as controls go, the QF20 is a lot like Samsung's shoot-and-share waterproof HMX-W300minicamcorder.
Many camcorders have a battery that juts out the back, which in turn puts the controls on top. The battery and SD card slot for the QF20 are in an internal compartment in the bottom. That frees up the back for a record button and zoom control to the left and right of it. 

One advantage that the QF20 has over some of its competitors (and smartphones for that matter) is that it does have optical image stabilization. It does make a difference, so if you're trying to pick between this Samsung and another model that just has electronic image stabilization, go with the QF20.

What it offers: 
Good video for Web sharing and a 20x zoom lens, the Samsung HMX-QF20 gets the job done.
The advantage: 

Samsung HMX-QF20 is a small, lightweight, shoot-and-share camcorder with a 20x optical zoom and built-in Wi-Fi for backups and direct uploads to YouTube, Facebook, and Picasa.
The unfavorable: 
QF20's video isn't really HD-quality and it's only good for viewing at small sizes. HD recordings cannot be uploaded wirelessly and Wi-Fi back up is Windows only.

The Google Nexus 7

What you should know: 
Several months after its debut, the Nexus 7 is still an excellent tablet. The 8GB version is gone and the tablet now starts at $199 for 16GB. Paying $249 nets you the 32GB version, and the 32GB version with HSPA+ is available for $299.
Aside from its new SIM card slot and slightly heavier weight, the Nexus 7 with HSPA+ is identical in look and feel to the original Wi-Fi-only version.

Tablet settings can now be accessed much more quickly. Simply swipe down from the top-right corner to reveal a tray of shortcuts, including brightness, Wi-Fi settings, general settings, battery life, airplane mode, and so on.
Magnification attempts to take advantage of the screen's 1,280x800-pixel resolution. After enabling in settings, if you tap the screen three times in quick succession, assets on the screen will magnify in the section where you tapped.

What it offers: 
Its excellent design, useful software features, and low starting price, the Nexus 7 is the cheapest way to experience the best that the Android OS has to offer.
The advantage: 
Nexus 7 features a sharp screen, a comfortable design, and great battery life at a low starting price. Android 4.2 adds some welcome and useful features.
The unfavorable: 
Android still needs more tablet-optimized apps, newer games have frame rate issues, and HSPA+ speeds seem particularly location-dependent.

The Maingear Nomad 17

What you should know: 
The Maingear Nomad 17 starts at $1,579, but our tricked-out configuration came in at $2,099, and included an Intel Core i7-3740QM CPU and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M GPU. By way of comparison, a nearly identically configured Origin Eon17-S laptop comes out to just about the same price (with one year of warranty coverage for each).
This is not a sexy laptop. Despite the glossy red lid and the brushed-metal accents, it screams mid-'00s.
One bright spot is that the Nomad 17's top lid comes with your choice of colors, all done in automotive paint the company says uses "the exact same materials found on supercars around the world from Ferrari, Porsche, and others," at no extra charge.

What it offers: 
A hefty investment if nicely configured, the Maingear Nomad 17 delivers for serious gaming, although the look may not be for everyone.The keys are deep and widely spaced, making them good for PC gaming, where many games rely on not only the WASD keys for control, but also the spacebar and left Shift and Ctrl buttons. The large touch pad is a decent size for a desktop-replacement laptop, but it is an older-style pad, with separate left and right mouse buttons, rather than the buttonless clickpad design seen in so many current laptops.

The advantage: 
The Maingear Nomad 17 offers fast performance and deep configuration options, and Maingear has a great rep for support.
The unfavorable: 
A $2,000 laptop really needs a better keyboard and touch pad, and a less generic body.
